WEST SIDE STORY FROM AUSTRALIA
The west side of Australia and it’s Margaret River area has proven itself to be an outstanding premium wine region, even though it is on the opposite side of the continent where the majority of wine is grown. Free draining, gravel-laced soils, summers that are warm with limited rainfall and extra cloud cover plus cool breezes off the Indian Ocean that temper the temperature, combine to provide the perfect terroir. While the signature grape variety is Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay has also proven itself to be the ideal white varietal for this part of the country. Feminine wines with distinctive varietal complexities, delicate and elegant flavors and a precise structure with a pleasing mineral character are the end product. And Stella Bella winery leads the pack of the region’s premium producers. While Stella Bella, translated from the Italian, means beautiful star, it was actually taken from the name of the owner’s dog with the same name. Grapefruit and mineral aromas with slight buttery notes lead the way to a palate that is bright with a frisky acidity grapefruit and cool mouth feel. It ticks off all the desired sensory boxes. Not to be selfish, but shellfish would be our recommended pairing.
