OLD GOLD TREAT
To pop a bottle of older Vintage Champagne is the pinnacle of sparkling wine enjoyment. Champagne Boizel, located on the prestigious Avenue de Champagne in the town of Epernay, have been perfecting their craft since 1834. One of their specialties is releasing older vintage Champagnes that have been quietly resting and maturing in their cellars deep, deep below street level. This 50/50 cuvée of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir has been resting for 7 years in their cellars and another 6 years in the bottle. The grapes only come from top rated village sites within the Champagne appellation. Bottled with a dosage of only 4 gm/l, what an epiphany of taste. And the bouquet! The mandatory toastiness leads us on to apple, pear and spice nuances. A long, lingering taste persists and is beautifully balanced and underpinned by a refreshing acidity. We don’t want to seem selfish, but premium shellfish would be the preferred pairing. Wine Enthusiast rated it with 93 points.
