YOU’RE GONNA LOVE URUGUAY WINES

A small country wedged between Argentina and Brazil, Uruguay is the hotbed of the Tannat grape. Brought with them by immigrants from the Basque region of Spain in the 1870’s, it has established itself as an international benchmark. Located in northern Uruguay, bordering Brazil, the Rivera region has sandy, deep red soils and a continental climate moderated by the Atlantic region. The Carrau family were pioneers in producing special reserve bottlings with a new approachable style for Uruguay, and especially export markets. Starting with grapes from an average of 40 year old vines, slow fermentation takes place in open tanks and then aging in second fill French oak barrels. Balanced, modern and approachable, this Tannat has substance. Intense ruby red. Classic notes of cedar and red fruits are present in the nose. Violets, plums and quince with round, smooth tannins round out the full body. Approximately 5% of Uruguay wines are exported in the bottle, so we have a special treat for consumers to be found on the shelves of LCBO Vintages this holiday season. Since cattle ranching, as in Argentina, is an important sector of the economy and gastronomy, Tannat wines are the perfect match for any beef dish, especially prime rib this holiday season. UK’s Decanter Magazine rated it at 92 points.

2018 Cerro Chapeu Reserva Tannat V19476, $22.95
