THREE PADDLES: TOP PINOT NOIR POINTS

Located on the south end of New Zealand’s North Island, Martinborough is considered to be the country’s “Burgundy” with the emphasis on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. An hour north-east of the nation’s capital, Wellington, in the rain shadow of Remutaka Range, the grapes benefit from a very long, cool, dry growing season. The area’s extensive diurnal (day to night) temperature variations aid in developing the ideal amount of freshness in the wines. In recognition of New Zealanders’ love of the sea and champions on the water, Nga Waka Winery chose the name Three Paddles for its entry level wines. Look for typical regional characters of red berries and cherries mixed with spicy and earthy notes. Soft-textured with supple tannins, the flavours of red fruits and spice carry through to the palate with a soft, persistent finish. The 2020 New World Wine Awards awarded this wine a Gold Medal and 95 points. We would pair it with a veal ragout in a cream sauce accompanied with a mushroom risotto.

2017 Three Paddles Martinborough Pinot Noir #19617, $24.95
