IT’S GETTING DARKER

Daylight is diminishing and darkness is setting in a little bit sooner with each fall day. The temperature is cooling down, the leaves are turning colour and tumbling down. We wake up to dew-covered lawns and vehicle windshields. It seems that overnight we convert to consuming foods and beverages that are fuller. Comfort foods, more red wines versus whites, beers with more body and deeper colour top our “to do and enjoy” list. A classic, full bodied brew is smoke beer, called Rauchbier, a specialty that comes from Bamberg, Germany. Aecht Schlenkerla is the icon brew of Bamberg. The barley grain is smoked over beechwood logs during the malting process. After fermentation, the finished product matures in cold cellars hewn deep into the Bamberg hillsides. The dark-amber Aecht Schlenkera is unfiltered, unpasteurized, and bottle-conditioned. The original bottle conditioning creates a complex smoky taste profile intertwined with dark fruit, toasted nut and charred wood flavours. The colour is dark amber and naturally hazy. The aroma is full of smoke followed by bacon and leather notes. The finish is clean with a slight bit of smoke left on the palate. It’s not for the faint of heart, but makes the perfect foil for smoked meat dishes. Enjoy with pulled pork or smoked sausages. Guess what? Since it is brewed according to the Reinheitsgebot of 1516, it’s vegan.
