DARK MATTERS

Dark beers are not just for the colder time of the year. As long as the alcohol level is reasonable, it will provide a great taste experience year round. Such is the case for the latest addition to the famous Hofbrau family of fine beers, Hofbrau Dunkel. It clocks in at 5% alc./vol. Dunkel means dark in German. Using dark malts in the brewing process, if we look at the glass, we are greeted with a pale tan head. A dark, brooding colour and malty presence leads the way to toffee, caramel and spice. It is thirst quenching with a perfect balance between malty sweetness and hop bitterness. A most satisfying beer, it is well suited to quaffing on a warm spring afternoon. A hamburger “with the works” would definitely work well with this royal brew. Hofbrau, translated, means the brew of the royal court of Bavaria.
