We discovered this estate bottled, excellent value Cava a number of years ago while visiting the Penedes region of Spain near Barcelona. Known as the home of gargantuan amounts of commercially produced sparkling wine brands, Penedes is home to artisanal producers too. Finca Valldosera is located in the Massis del Garraf overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. What looks like odd-shaped paint stains on the metal hood that holds the cork in place, are actually the outlines of five vineyards of the estate if you were to take a bird’s eye view. They were carved out of the forest-covered finca (farm) located at different elevations with different soil types. The cuvée is a blend of local grape varieties of Macabeo, Xarel-lo, Parellada, and Subirat Parent and a small amount of Chardonnay, meant to reflect the diverse terroirs. Always bottled fermented, Cava producers employ the Methode Traditionelle, so as not to annoy Champagne producers and their highly coveted and protected Methode Champenoise designation. Bottle aged up to four years, it’s a Brut Nature, meaning it has not been topped up with a small dose of wine and sugar before shipping. Pale gold with greenish hues and a persistent stream of pinpoint bubbles, the bouquet is fresh with soft, doughy aromas and a dry elegant finish. Robert Parker gave it 90 points commenting: “over delivers in a big way.” Seafood tapas would definitely top off any tasting.
